Nigel Journal Entry 34

Day 69

You know what I woke up to this morning? It wasn’t the soothing sounds of the ocean waves breaking against the barrier islands, or the gentle rain slapping against the ground outside my cave, or even the soft snoring of Licks Prime who tends to cuddle up with me every other night. No, it was hammering. Someone was vigorously hammering down below, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled!

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love my animal buddies to death. They’re far closer than pets, with some closer than even friends. I would never have survived this long without them, but not one of them had ever taken positive initiative.

If a task needed doing, aside from eating or slinging poo, then it was up to me to see it through. I would have to either do it myself or assign an appropriately tamed beast to perform it for me. Not one of them would take it upon themselves to do any chores without my prompting.

The Rank 3s were slightly better, but there’s a limit to what they can do on their own. I’m curious to see what a tamed rank of 4 might bring, but Faux, closest to ranking up, is still a good 25% below the mark. She’ll get there, but in the meantime, nothing beats a human.

I rushed out of the cave to see who had decided to bless our ears with the sound of their crafting. It was Jeanette, but my excitement evaporated upon seeing what lay before her. She was dismantling one of my flintlock pistols!

“Hey you! Stop it!” I shouted, sprinting down the mountain. She tossed up a friendly wave but still managed to remove the trigger before I reached her.

“Good morning!” she said cheerfully.

“I thought it was! What are you doing to my gun?”

Smiling innocently, she popped off the hammer. “Improving it.”

“If it can’t shoot, then it’s not an improvement! What are you planning?”

Jeanette shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. I was thinking of some sort of scattergun or blunderbuss. I can’t be certain, and there is still much work to be done. Even so, I promise you will enjoy the finished weapon. I aim to pull my weight around here, don’t you worry.”

Weight pulling was the least of my worries just then. I didn’t like the idea of destroying proven weaponry without confirmation of a clear and positive outcome… but I’ve also heard there can be no gain without sacrifice. If we’re going to continue successfully driving the murker waves back, then we’ll need to experiment and try things others might find unconventional. For better or worse, I gave her my blessing.

“Fine, just don’t break any more of my stuff. If you want to take something apart, please ask prior to doing so. As crazy as it might sound, I might have a very specific purpose for whatever it is you’re trying to destroy. Okay?”

“Have it your way. I won’t touch any more of your guns, but I would like open access to your Storehouse, as well as the Salvager and Crafter’s Fount.
